Since written, Hamlet has had many different interpretetaions, but the most famous interpretations couldnt be more different. Ethan Hawke s, David Tenant s and Kenneth Brannagh s version of Hamlets have much more differences than only the time period or setting.
The first scence, performed by Kenneth Brannagh s, illustrates Hamlet much more confident about himself than the other two versions. We see how he starts gaining power and confidance during the speech by showing his fist, getting closer to the mirror and even taking a knife out, would this mean he is finally adquiring the will to kill the King?
The second version, Ethan Hawke s, shows a Hamlet that is more inmersed in his thoughts. He is in a blockbuster store, in the ACTION section. He is searching for something in that section and doesnt decide which one to choose, representing maybe all his thoughts and him not deciding which one to choose, to be or not to be, to kill or not to kill. He then sees a man being burned, which may represent Hamlets anger killing the king, and maybe he has decided to finally kill him.
The laste scene, David Tenant s, portraits a more worried Hamlet. This Hamlet closes his eyes in the middle of the scence and doesnt open them until almost the end, including when talking about the calamities, as if he wanted them to be a dream. He is also in a dark environment which may represent his mind and the whole he feels in it. Unlike the other, he does not show signs of getting stronger, but sadder, which may be a reason to kill Cladius.
